Dear Tennis Member, As many of you may know, I made a change in the current staff leadership at our YMCA Tennis Center. Eric Quiroz, who has been our Tennis Center Director and Administrator for the past two years worked his last day on Friday, February 20th. Eric made a number of positive contributions to the activities at the Tennis Center, and I am sure many of you have appreciated his programming efforts and teaching abilities. With that in mind, I offered Eric the opportunity to continue his teaching and working with groups; but I would remove all administrative and management responsibilities so that he could focus on what he enjoys most. He indicated that he is not interested in considering that employment option at this time. I want to publicly thank Eric for his contributions to the YMCA and the Tennis Center and wish him the very best. We are in the process of working with the Tennis Center Advisory Council to put together an operating plan that I am confident will provide a positive tennis experience for our members as we move forward. There are still a number of details to be worked out, and we will share these with you as they are finalized. Currently, Alex Fandino will continue to focus his efforts on programming components at the Tennis Center. Susan Niles, Director of Membership Services for the YMCA, will assume the administrative and management functions. Her responsibilities will also include working with the Tennis Advisory Council, staff management, membership sales/service, and communications. Please feel free to contact me at the YMCA 686-9622 or via e mail at dave@eugeneymca.org if you have questions, suggestions, or would like to share any concerns regarding these changes. Thank You Dave Perez There has never been a better time to be a YMCA. We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities—and now, more than ever, our kids, families and community need that strength. Consider the following conversation a YMCA staff had recently: A Y mom called on a Friday to say that her 4 and 8 year old girls would not be showing up for child care on Monday, and could she be refunded for the remainder of the month? The YMCA staff asked if there was something about the program that was upsetting, causing for this abrupt withdrawal of her children. “No,” she replied, “My husband was laid off today, so we cannot afford it.” Our YMCA staff responded by offering to consider her payment for the current month good through the entire month to follow. “This would give your husband time to look for a new job.” “When your husband gets a new job and you are able to afford it, we trust that you’ll do what you can. For now, if you want to keep the kids home some days, that’s great, but you can always bring them in to the Y when you need it.” The two girls showed up on Monday, unaware of any major disruption to their family’s life. Three weeks later, the third grader proudly announced that her daddy had a new job. We received a payment for the month of January, along with a thank you from a family who needed a little extra support through a troubling time. This is one example of the many dozens of families who recently have expressed need—temporary, but definite need—and the YMCA has been able to help. Conversations like this one could not happen without you. Thanks to you, the Eugene Family YMCA’s answer to a call for help is an offer to help. Please consider a gift to the Youth Scholarship Fund in 2009. There has never been a better time to give. There has never been a better time to be a YMCA.
Build strong kids, strong families, strong communities...That is our goal. This community if full of amazing people and we are so fortunate that many of them are part of our YMCA. If you have a story about being part of this YMCA and how we have met our goal, please send your story to Susan, We will be highlighting these stories on our website, in our newsletter and in our brochures. So, if you are willing to share your true-life YMCA story, please send it in.
The Eugene Family YMCA, like the rest of the community, is faced with making many of these changes. As we move forward we know we must be smart and conservative. These are just a few of the choices we've made to ensure that we can continue offering the best service, programs and opportunities to our members and community. Y Staff: Currently we have frozen the staff salaries. This will be reviewed in the coming months and adjusted based on the current and forecasted economy. Big Brothers and Big Sisters: As we mentioned in January's newsletter, Big Brothers Big Sisters has merged with Committed Partners for Youth. This merge will allow us to make the best use of our dollars and efforts. For more information, please see their website at http://www.committedpartners.org/ Eugene YMCA Swim Team has merged with the Eugene City Swim Club: The combining of these two teams has created a great swim team program for the athletes and has allowed the reduction of redundant overhead. For more information, please see their website at http://www.eugenecityswimclub.org/. As we move forward, we will continue updating you on changes and opportunities, In the mean time, thank you for your continue support and for the important role you play in our YMCA Community.
Remember to Register for Tennis Lessons... We want your child's experience to be the best it can be. If you have questions, comments or concerns, please don't hesitate to talk to your child's instructor or Susan.
Do you have your Membership Card? We know you are an important part of the YMCA community, and asking for your card doesn't mean we question you. We just can't keep track of the renewal dates and updates for all our members in our heads! Thank you for your help.
