About
The Alzheimer's Association, in partnership with the Y, is offering 10 courses suited for both caregivers and general audiences. These no-cost, science-based educational programs are for those interested in brain health and dementia caregiving skills. They include questions and exercises to apply new learnings. The first 5 lectures (September-January) focus on general education, while the second 5 lectures (February-June) will aim to empower caregivers.

Cost: FREE for Y members! Community members must create an account and register before attending.
Date: 1st Thursday of every month, through June 2025 (2nd Thursday in January)

December Lecture - Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia

This course covers basic information on the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, stages, risk factors, research and FDA-approved treatments.
January Lecture - Dementia Conversations
Thursday, Jan. 9, 1 to 2 p.m.
This course gives caregivers tips and strategies for having difficult — but important — conversations about driving, visiting the doctor and legal and financial planning.
February Lecture - Empowered Caregiver: Building Foundations of Caregiving
Thursday, Feb. 6, 1 to 2 p.m.
Building Foundations of Caregiving explores the role of caregiver and changes they may experience, building a support team and managing caregiver stress.
March Lecture - Empowered Caregiver: Supporting Independence
Thursday, Mar. 6, 1 to 2 p.m.
Supporting Independence focuses on helping the person living with dementia take part in daily activities, providing the right amount of support and balancing safety and independence while managing expectations.
April Lecture - Empowered Caregiver: Communicating Effectively
Thursday, Apr. 3, 1 to 2 p.m.
Communicating Effectively teaches how dementia affects communication, including tips for communicating well with family, friends and health care professionals.
May Lecture - Empowered Caregiver: Responding to Dementia Related Behavior
Thursday, May 1, 1 to 2 p.m.
Responding to Dementia-Related Behaviors details common behavior changes and how they are a form of communication, non-medical approaches to behaviors and recognizing when additional help is needed.
June Lecture - Empowered Caregiver: Exploring Care and Support Services
Thursday, Jun. 5, 1 to 2 p.m.
Exploring Care and Support Services examines how best to prepare for future care decisions and changes, including respite care, residential care and end-of life care.
