Are you whistle-worthy?
Who: Those 15 years and older, who are able to pass the Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence
Cost: $160 for Members | $180 for Community Members
Note: If you don't pass the Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence, the cost is refundable, minus the $50 testing fee.
Duration: Sessions are all 3 days—Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Class times:
- Friday, 5:45 to 9 p.m; meet in the YMCA Lobby
- Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Updating dates:
- Session 1: Apr. 25, 26, 27
- Session 2: May 2, 3, 4
- Session 3: May 16, 17, 18
- Session 4: Jun. 6, 7, 8
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive the following Red Cross certifications, valid for 2 years:
- Lifeguarding
- First Aid
- CPR and AED
Before the in-person course begins, participants must complete the Online Prerequisite Course. Please plan to complete the online coursework (6-8 hours) at least 2 days prior to your first in-person session.
All candidates must successfully complete the Lifeguarding Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence, which will will occur on the first day of the course at 5:45 p.m. and require that you:
- Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
- Swim goggles are allowed.
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, which includes:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards; face may be in or out of the water, swim goggles are not allowed.
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands, and keeping the face at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Missing class time:
You must be present for all planned hours of this course. Do not plan on missing any class time. If you know you are going to miss a whole day of class or more, please do not enroll in this course. If you have to miss an hour or two for an appointment, you must make arrangements with the course organizer. Depending on what material you’ll be missing, this may or may not be acceptable. You will be held responsible for learning and practicing the material missed on your own time.
