Y staff Lisa Milton and Danielle Ragan have been selected to participate in an Undoing Racism Cohort with the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond.
The intensive training starts this week and ends June 4. It is part of an effort by the Y-USA Diversity, Inclusion, Global and Multicultural Development Team to provide professional development around issues of race, equity, diversity and inclusion for Y leaders around the country.
"I look forward to bringing back the knowledge gained to our Y community as we further our DIG efforts and start untethering institutional oppression in our own backyard," says Danielle Ragan, a Multi-Site Coordinator and co-chair of your Y's Diversity, Inclusion and Global Engagement Committee. "It takes understanding and awareness of institutional racism in order to move forward to "undo" it. I am appreciative of the opportunity to further my own understanding so that I can help our Y share that understanding that will lead to transformative action in our community."
Danielle and Lisa are one of 100 individuals from YMCAs across the country selected to participate in these cohorts. Their inclusion and training reflects the Eugene Y's commitment toward becoming an anti-racist, multi-cultural organization.
"We have partnered with national funders to provide training to local Ys that we hope will do two things: Provide a common analysis about race in our country and the effects it has on everyone; and provide insight to the value of the workshop and work with local Ys to provide spaces for their leaders to have the conversation as a whole," says Victor Rivera of Y-USA.

Families, Hop On Your Bike In Celebration of Bike Month
Your Y is thrilled to promote May is Bike Month through its partnership with the Active Transportation Committee, which advises the City of Eugene's Transportation Planning Team on issues related to walking, biking, rolling and busing.
We all know that biking is a great way to get around town, enjoy the benefits of exercise and reduce air pollution from vehicles, and this month is the perfect time to explore new routes and make new biking friends.
Families are invited to a city-sponsored bike ride from Shasta Middle School to Golden Gardens Park, where kids can enjoy a treasure hunt before returning to the middle school. The Saturday, May 8, event is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and one of many bike opportunities throughout May.
