YOUR Y REACHES OUT TO FEDERAL WORKERS
While the government shutdown kept federal workers from bringing home an income, your Y provided support and an outlet for their unpaid time off. Robert Pennington, who worked for the U.S. Forest Service, was the first federal worker to accept the benefit.
“I was in a physically demanding job, and I had access to a well-stocked gym at the ranger station if I wanted it,” he said. “I chose the Y over a traditional gym because I’m more interested in engaging in a variety of activity over just weightlifting. The Y has everything--courts, aerobic classes, yoga classes, swimming, weights, and cardio equipment. I had also hoped that it would work with me and my currently-zero income since the Y is a community center that is more interested in enhancing people’s lives than they are making a buck.”
Robert said it better than we could--your Y doesn’t want to turn anyone away for their inability to pay, and we want to always be on the forefront of responding to changing community needs.
The Y understands the significant financial impact of a month of no pay, so the benefit is available until June 1. Federal workers, come visit us at the Front Desk, also known as the Welcome Center. All federal workers receive half-off new or current memberships for three months, and new members do not have to pay the joining fee.
